West Central Lawn Care is a job training initiative, whereby youth from the neighborhood staff a lawn care service, which tends the lawns of area residents and commercial properties. This program provides job training, skill building, business experience, entrepreneurial opportunity, positive social outlet, and community development. Lawn care youth participants are involved in shaping and beautifying their own neighborhood, thereby positively influencing the place where they reside. Creating a venue for youth to work instills in them the notions that they are valuable and have positive gifts to contribute to their community. Further, their intrinsic value is upheld and honored by their presence and visibility within the community. Through the lawn care program, Project Hope Spokane helps provide resident youth a means to address issues of poverty by providing leadership training while completing paid seasonal work. The skills gained by youth participants are applicable to future work, career, and life.
