Building Community in Uncertain Times

In the face of the COVID-19 crisis, River City Youth Ops has been working to identify safe, creative ways to maintain a presence in our treasured community. In April, we thought to build seed starter kits, available by donation, that would provide individuals and families with an opportunity to plant seeds at home. They would then have the option to transplant these to their own garden, or donate them back to River City Youth Ops to be planted in one of our urban gardens.

Over the course of two weekends, our seed kit distributions evolved into a market of sorts, with honey, gourmet salts, and vegetable starts also coming available for purchase. From a safe distance of six feet, smiling through masks and waving our freshly sanitized hands, we were finally able to be with our West Central neighbors.

Finding new ways to raise funds and build connections has been a challenge, but we are incredibly heartened by the support we have continued to receive from the greater Spokane community!

Special thanks to Spokane Masks, Trader Joes, and the countless individuals who donated egg cartons to make the seed starter kits a reality!
